“MEMORIALS”

by Rick Mosher

This is a time of year when we think of memorials. Particularly we think ofthe Memorial Day holiday, a time of remembrance of our loved ones who
have gone on. Often around this holiday there is also special attention given of our wonderful veterans who passed away.

There are other memorials around the country that we think of as well. I have been to the Lincoln Memorial, an impressive site remembering the life
and words of the President who saved the Union. There is also the Jefferson Memorial. There are memorials to the veterans of various wars and the
Memorial Wall in memory of service personnel who gave their lives in Vietnam.

A number of hospitals over the years have been built as memorials to the veterans from certain counties or cities. Some of these hospitals have grown
large, taken on a regional role with a lot of specialties, and abandoned the memorial role and designation. However, here in Texas County we still
have a memorial hospital. There is also one over in nearby Salem.

I said all that to say this, memorials are important and since they are, we as Christians have such a memorial. It’s a memorial of Jesus’ death on the cross in which He paid for our sins and bought our salvation. It’s called in Scripture by names such as The Lord’s Supper, Communion, and the breaking of bread. In Luke 22.19-20 we find concerning Jesus: And hetook bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 20 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”

It is important that we who are in Christ, remember what He did for us on the cross. In the 20 th chapter of Acts and verse seven, we find the pattern of the first century church meeting on the first day of the week to “break bread”. Therefore, in the Licking Christian Church we take time every Sunday to eat the unleavened bread and drink the grape juice, the memorial of Jesus’ death for us. We invite you to participate with us in this memorial.

Thinking of Jesus’ death on the cross raises the question, “Have you taken Jesus as your Lord and Savior? Have you been saved from your sins?” If not yet, then by all means put your faith in Him, repent from sin and make Him the Lord of your life, confess your faith in Him, and be baptized (immersed) into Him for the  forgiveness of your sins and to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Then go on living in Him this wonderful Christian life and regularly participate with your fellow Christians in remembering what Jesus has done for us.
